A First Look at Mendocino Farms West

What exactly the new Mendocino Farms in Marina Del Rey means to the Westside Sandwich Scene (yes, it deserves capital letters) is yet to be seen. Some blogs have hinted at a possible rivalry with Bay Cities. Not so sure about that. Long lines notwithstanding, good luck swaying a sandwichovore away from BC. There's also the fact the two sandwich spots serve different niches. Mendocino Farms is a so-called fancy sandwich spot with fancy meats and fancy spreads. Bay Cities is more of a simple Italian deli (with a little LA flair). That said, Mendocino Farms is legit.

To start, a very beautiful space. And once you step inside you are genially greeted and assisted in your sandwich ordering...

Making the 'wiches...

Get a fancy soda...

If it's nice (it almost always is)... sit outside.

Potato salad...

The Highway 128 (roasted chicken, Herbes de Provence marinated Cypress Grove’s goat cheese, ancho chili cranberry chutney, organic farmer’s market greens, green apple (jalapeno relish by request) on wheat bread). A very solid 'wich...

The star of the evening, The Sophisticated Chicken (prosciutto and roasted chicken, Gioia fresh mozzarella, organic greens, crushed honey roasted almonds, tomatoes in a basil pesto-balsamic vinaigrette). Absolutely delicious, especially the almonds...

Overall, Mendo Farms is a great new addition to the Westside. Above average sandwiches, a sleek storefront and kind service never go wrong.
