The New Native Foods "Meatball Sub"

I have to admit hesitancy prior to pulling the trigger on my latest Native Foods lunch order. Was I really going to order a vegan "Super Italian Meatball Sub?" More so, if I were to order this so-called sandwich, is there any effin' way I would like it?

In retrospect, I am happy I had the balls to order the balls. Obviously, there is a stigma associated with vegan foods -- it simply does not taste as good as the "real" thing to non-vegans. No matter how hard the veganarians fight to assure us it tastes just as good, it almost never does. Trying to persuade me that something vegan is worth eating is akin to getting a hard core righty to admit public health care is the way to go.

BUT... that does not mean some vegan food cannot rise above the others. Krissys cookies, for example. And, I'm happy to report, the Super Italian Meatball Sub as well. While certainly not in the LA Meatball Sandwich Pantheon with such luminaries as All About the Bread, Bay Cities and Fraiche, it is still mighty tasty. Like they demonstrate successfully with their "fried chicken," Native Foods does a great job of masking the seitan meat balls with various seasonings, and, in this case, marinara sauce, caramelized onions, roasted sweet peppers, pumpkin seed pesto, the house ranch and faux Parmesan.

Overall, a solid, filling sandwich that I would certainly order again.
