From the Road: Firestone Grill (San Luis Obispo, CA)

Restaurant: Firestone Grill
Location: San Luis Obispo, CA
Date/Time: June 11, 2011 at 7:20 p.m.
The Eats: The Tri-Tip Steak Sandwich ($7.99)
Backstory: My sister's friend's husband proclaims: "The best tri-tip sandwich in the world is in SLO!"
Results: Stopped at Firestone on the way home from a weekend trip to the Bay Area. While I'm not prepared to declare it the best tri-tip in the world (I've only been to two continents after all), it's definitely the best tri-tip I've had in a long time. The meat itself is incredibly tender and oozes smokiness in every bite. The French roll's garlic butter rub and a simple dab of sweet BBQ sauce tips (tips... GET IT?) the sandwich over the top. Definitely worth dealing with the abomination that is 101 traffic (compared to the monotonous, but usually smooth riding 5) during your NorCal-SoCal jaunt.
Caution: Look out for unruly Cal Poly college kids. They practically live at the joint.

The famous Firestone Tri-Tip Sandwich.

CLOSE-UP!

Also recommended: Firestone Salad (add chicken).
