New Mandarette Happy Hour: Come For the 99 Cent Beer, Stay For the Cheap Eats

I feel like I've been hearing whisperings about Mandarette at work, birthday parties, dog parks, dentist offices and in dark alleyways my entire life. Two random strangers' conversation usually goes like this: Person #1 says, "I wish I didn't have to go to the SGV for good Chinese food," while Person #2 responds, "You don't. Go to Mandarette, it's solid." Person #3 (me) then thinks, "Eff, why haven't I ever been to Mandarette?" After all, the place has been a Mid-City West mainstay for 27 years.

Then it happened. As if they could read my mind, Mandarette recently invited U.E. to sample their brand spanking new Happy Hour menu. Pictures below...

The menu, which is offered Monday through Saturday from 3 pm to 6 pm, features the best beer deal in town alongside some of Mandarette's signature fare.

The Happy Hour beer is draft Kirin... for NINETY-NINE FREAKING CENTS. That's like college town prices in the heart of LA.

The HH menu also features "Shoju Ginger Ale," which is a great combination of shoju liquor and Mandarette's housemade ginger ale.

The star of the Happy Hour food menu is definitely the Beef on a Stick - juicy meat slathered in the Chef's Special Sauce and topped with cashew powder.

Here at U.E. we're not big tofu people, but if you are I certainly recommend the hefty HH portion of the perfectly silky Fried Tofu, which comes with a sweet sauce.

Every good Happy Hour must offer wings and Mandarette's do not disappoint (especially when you get six for $3.99). My favorite were the above pictured "Salt & Pepper" wings.

Although the "Spicy" were pretty solid as well.

Overall, a really solid Happy Hour menu at Mandarette. Good food at a good price. I would definitely return for the 99 cent beer and the Beef on a Stick and would love to sample the Slice BBQ Pork.

  1. I've been ordering takeout from this place for a while. I never thought to go during happy hour. After reading this post, I went with a buddy of mine last weekend. Needless to say, it was the best $17 i've spent in a long time. Ordered everything off the happy hour menu and we each had 4 beers. Total was $34 and some change.

    .99 cent beers?!?!

Nice blog! Keep up the good work!
